IIMB faculty conduct research individually and collaboratively in a very broad range of disciples within and related to microbial biology. Research programs are supported by NSF, NIH, DOE, USDA, NASA and other federal and state agencies. General topics and associated faculty include:

Molecular biology, genetics and physiology

Mechanisms and controls of plant and animal diseases

Microbial ecology, including extreme environments

Geomicrobiology

Environmental microbiology, including biodegradation and bioproducts (fuels, chemicals)
