Undergraduate Instruction Undergraduate instruction in microbial biology is available through several options. The Department of Biological Sciences offers a B.S. in Microbiology and provides a set of courses for majors and non-majors. Examples include introductory courses in microbiology, phycology and mycology and more specialized courses in diversity, ecology, genetics, physiology and pathogenesis. Other departments, including Geology and Geophysics, Food Science, AEM, Environ Studies offer courses emphasizing aspects of microbial biology. These include Food and Industrial Microbiology, Geomicrobiology, Marine and Environmental Microbiology, Biochemical Engineering and Dairy Microbiology, among others. Undergraduate students interested in microbial biology are encouraged to participate in a student chapter of the American Society for Microbiology, and to develop undergraduate research experiences with faculty advisors. Graduate Instruction Graduate students can pursue Masters and Ph.D. degrees through multiple departments with advisors that emphasize microbial biology in a wide range of disciplinary areas that reflect the diverse interests, backgrounds and departmental affiliations of the faculty. Graduate student support is available through various research and teaching assistantships. Prospective students are encouraged to contact faculty members with expertise that reflect students student interests. Applications are initially submitted to and processed by the Graduate School.
